EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

282

Harassment Complaints Database:
Union Policy

Branches are reminded of the CWU's stance on dealing with bullying and harassment cases. A bullying and harassment complaints database is held in the Equal Opportunities Department.

Branches are encouraged to utilise the HCD1 form to record allegations of bullying and harassment made by CWU members. Information concerning the HCD1 form can be found on the CWU website under the Equal Opportunities section.

We appreciate that this will add to an already busy work schedule but it is essential that, as a union, we instil confidence in our members that our zero tolerance policy on bullying and harassment is followed up with action and not just words.

The data that comes through to headquarters will be vital in enabling us to analyse and identify any problem patterns which may exist and we can flag these accordingly.

We extend our appreciation to all those branches who consistently comply with this request and look forward to the co-operation of all branches in this matter.

Any queries in relation to this paragraph should be addressed to Linda Roy, National Equality Officer.

283

Mandatory Equality & Diversity Training

Branch secretaries are requested to ensure that any person in their branch who has CWU representative responsibilities and has not yet completed their mandatory equality & diversity training are enrolled in the courses that are planned throughout the regions in the forthcoming months.

All reps must do the training - this includes divisional reps, area reps, unit reps and branch officers. For clarification on dates please contact your regional secretary.

The training has been running now for over three years and there are still a substantial number of reps who have not completed the training.

Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Equal Opportunities Department.

BT TSO: Strategy, Services and Operation - Closure of PSTN Diagnostic Function - Colombo House

Nationally and locally, the union has been informed of the intention to undergo a restructure within the TSO Volume Services team in Colombo House.

The reasoning follows an investment in automation for PSTN repair diagnostic testing which is now allowing a significant volume of work to be dispatched without the need for manual handling. This automation was delivered in July and has exceeded the level that was expected and management is delivering above target service.

The PSTN diagnostic function is split across two teams: AGB House, Edinburgh (15 FTE fully trained) and Colombo House, London (4 FTE part trained).

Management will close down the function in London and consolidate all remaining activity in Edinburgh.

BT TSO: Project Python and Homeworkers' Allowance

As part of the TUPE transfer discussions, there were in scope a number of employees being paid £204 per month homeworker allowance.

As part of the payroll set up, BT had a need to go back to HP and check how they paid the allowance in respect of tax and NI.

HP subsequently declared that the allowance was being paid free of both tax and NI which clearly is not permitted. On further investigation, HP have advised BT that the payment should actually be £204 per year not per month bringing it in line with HMRC limits for this type of allowance.

This has come about as a result of a keying error in HP payroll that made the payment change from annual to monthly in April 2012.

HP payroll did not pick up the error and the employees failed to advise HP that the allowance had increased from one month to the next and so the payment kept being made. Clearly this is an error and there was no intention to pay the allowance at this level.

Management is going to advise employees that BT will reinstate the allowance back to its original level of £204 per year effective from 1st December assuming. This will be dependent on being able to process into the payroll system.

Thursday 24 April - Tuesday 6 May 2014: Cuba Solidarity Campaign - Break the Blockade with the Cycle Cuba Challenge 2014. Over the years over 100 trade unionists have joined the cycle challenge with support from their regions and national organisations and we very much hope that in 2014 we will be able to broaden further the support for this unique solidarity event. After 50 years of the cruel US blockade, Cuba still requires much needed material solidarity to support its social infrastructure. This year we will again raise money for essential educational equipment for young visually impaired Cuban school children and the cyclists will deliver the aid directly to the Abel Santamaria School in Havana. Trade Union visits such as the Cycle Cuba Challenge send a real message of international friendship and ensure that the Cuban people are not left alone. This year's blockade busting Cycle Challenge runs 315 kilometres from Sancti Spíritus, one of Cuba's seven original Spanish towns, to the historic city of Santa Clara. The route passes through Trinidad, Cuba's best preserved colonial town and a UNESCO World Heritage site to Cienfuegos, where we have received a special invitation to participate in the inspiring May Day Rally alongside thousands of Cubans. Then it is on to Santa Clara, site of Che Guevara's evocative mausoleum and historic victory against Batista's troop train. We then return to Havana, for further exploration of this fascinating capital city along with opportunities to meet Cuban trade unionists. The full details, itinerary and booking forms are all available to view and download here:www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk/tours/tour.asp?tourid=2
