Harassment Complaints Database: Union Policy
Branches are reminded of the CWU's stance on dealing with bullying and harassment cases. A bullying and harassment complaints database is held in the Equal Opportunities Department.
Branches are encouraged to utilise the HCD1 form to record allegations of bullying and harassment made by CWU members. Information concerning the HCD1 form can be found on the CWU website under the Equal Opportunities section.
We appreciate that this will add to an already busy work schedule but it is essential that, as a union, we instil confidence in our members that our zero tolerance policy on bullying and harassment is followed up with action and not just words.
The data that comes through to headquarters will be vital in enabling us to analyse and identify any problem patterns which may exist and we can flag these accordingly. We extend our appreciation to all those branches who consistently comply with this request and look forward to the co-operation of all branches in this matter.
Any queries in relation to this paragraph should be addressed to Linda Roy, National Equality Officer.

Mandatory Equality & Diversity Training
Branch secretaries are requested to ensure that any person in their branch who has CWU representative responsibilities and has not yet completed their mandatory equality & diversity training are enrolled in the courses that are planned throughout the regions in the forthcoming months.
All reps must do the training - this includes divisional reps, area reps, unit reps and branch officers. For clarification on dates please contact your regional secretary.
The training has been running now for over three years and there are still a substantial number of reps who have not completed the training.
Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

EVENTS BULLETIN

Friday 11 October 2013: Black History Month (On the eve of the Race Advisory Committee's Conference).
To commemorate this year's Black History Month, CWU's National Youth Committee and Equal Opportunities Department will host a joint afternoon event focusing on 'What black history teaches us about solving today's challenges'. 3:30pm - 5:30pm at Mechanics Centre (formerly the Mechanics Institute), Manchester. The event is open to all BME members, but we are particularly keen to engage with young activists and members from these communities. The format will be a panel discussion with ample opportunity for contributions from members of the audience. A number of high profile activists from the BME communities have being approached and there will be an announcement on the composition of the panel shortly. This initiative follows on from the very successful black leadership course run by the Equal Opportunities Department in February this year and from the adoption by the CWU's National Youth Conference of policy committing this section of the union to develop initiatives that specifically engage with young activists from the BME communities. For information please contact Simon Sapper's office on 020 8971 7281 or the Equal Opportunities Department on 020 8971 7356

The original aim of the regulations was to strengthen the rights of workers involved in transfers, and provide them with continuity of employment and of terms and conditions. But, as the government continues with their politically motivated attack on workers' protection through the undermining of employment law including the TUPE regulations, information and consultation rights and collective redundancy rights, the hard-fought rights of workers, look set to be weakened further.
