EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

256
Harassment Complaints Database: Union Policy
Branches are reminded of the CWU's stance on dealing with bullying and harassment cases. A bullying and harassment complaints database is held in the Equal Opportunities Department.
Branches are encouraged to utilise the HCD1 form to record allegations of bullying and harassment made by CWU members. Information concerning the HCD1 form can be found on the CWU website under the Equal Opportunities section.
We appreciate that this will add to an already busy work schedu le but it is essential that, as a union, we instil confidence in our members that our zero tolerance policy on bullying and harassment is followed up with action and not just words.
The data that comes through to headquarters will be vital in enabling us to analyse and identify any problem patterns which may exist and we can flag these accordingly.
We extend our appreciation to all those branches who consistently comply with this request and look forward to the co-operation of all branches in this matter.
Any queries in relation to this paragraph should be addressed to Linda Roy, National Equality Office.

257
Mandatory Equality & Diversity Training
Branch secretaries are requested to ensure that any person in their branch who has CWU representative responsibilities and has not yet completed their mandatory equality & diversity training are enrolled in the courses that are planned throughout the regions in the forthcoming months.
All reps must do the training - this includes divisional reps, area reps, unit reps and branch officers. For clarification on dates please contact your regional secretary.
The training has been running now for over three years and there are still a substantial number of reps who have not completed the training.
Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Maintaining the momentum of 2011's March for the Alternative and in the face of worsening austerity, the TUC is organising another mass demonstration in London. Called "A future that works", this demonstration will protest against a government fuelling a double-dip recession and for economic prosperity, job creation and industrial growth. As with past events, the CWU plans to co-ordinate a strong presence of members, reps and activists to support the march through central London and rally in Hyde Park. For more information visit TUC: A Future that Workswww.tuc.org.uk/economy/tuc-21056-f0.cfm or contact your regional secretarywww.cwu.org/cwu-branches.html

Tuesday 23 October 2012: TUC Climate Change Conference: Green is Good for Growth.09:00 to 16:15 at Congress House. The TUC's annual Climate Change Conference 2012 will focus on how to deliver a greener and stronger UK economy. The independent Committee on Climate Change has recently reported that the government "must do more" if it is to have any hope of achieving vital carbon reduction targets. At the same time, with the UK economy facing a lost decade of stagnation, going green has potential to bring us huge economic benefits, securing the quality jobs and new investment that future economic success will depend upon. Keynote addresses from the Business Secretary Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP and TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady and panel debates between business, trade unions, campaigners and politicians will be accompanied by expert-led workshops on key strategic issues in green economic policy including the development of the Green Investment Bank and the scope for achieving a green industrial policy. And we close with a question to an MP's panel: What makes a good green government? This exciting conference will make the case both for greener growth, and for the economic benefits that this approach could bring. To register please visitwww.greenisgoodforgrowth.eventbrite.com

Tuesday 23 October 2012: Back to the 80s: Right to Strike? Time: 19:30. Location: Bishopsgate Institute, 230 Bishopsgate, London. Tickets cost £8.00 concessions £6.00. Strikes and stoppages, mostly short and often unofficial, used to be a normal feature of British industrial relations. The 1980s witnessed a shift in the balance of power. Despite the era-defining conflicts such as those in the coal and print industries, government constraints on trade union activity alongside changes in labour and labour relations led to a sharp decline in industrial action. Did these changes inaugurate a less adversarial approach to conflict resolution or did they throttle unions and restrict workers' rights? Looking back to the past and considering the present, what have strikes achieved? Are they essential solidarity or collective militancy? With our panel consider the changing climate of industrial relations in Britain. Speakers include John Hendy QC, Sarah Veale (TUC) and John Longworth (British Chambers of Commerce). Further speakers to be announced. For more information contact: www.bishopsgate.org.uk or call 020 7392 9200

Saturday 27 October 2012: Stop The EDL Again! No Racist and Fascist English Defence League on Our Streets. Gather from 11am Walthamstow Town Centre. On 1 September over 4,000 people came out to protest against the English Defence League marching in Walthamstow. People from all sections of our community united in peaceful determined protest to send a powerful message that the EDL is not welcome here. In desperation the EDL have deliberately called a march to coincide with Eid, an important Muslim festival. This is a complete abuse of our community. We have a right to live our lives in peace without any threat from fascist groups like the EDL. We will not allow these racist thugs to intimidate us or denigrate the values and beliefs of our residents. We welcome the leader of the Borough Council in calling for united opposition to the EDL on our streets. We urge everyone to again join us in peaceful protest on Saturday 27 October. And, this time, we are also calling on people from around the country to come and stand shoulder to shoulder with the residents of Walthamstow to defend our multi-cultural community. Together, united, we will stop the EDL. Get involved today! On Facebook:www.facebook.com/wearewalthamforest Sign up for email updates at This email address is being protected from spambots. Wednesday 31 October 2012: Hands Off The Bus Pass! Defend Universal Benefits. In recent weeks there have been a series of attacks against universal pensioner benefits, such as free bus travel and the winter fuel allowance. Join the National Pensioners Convention as they stand together in defence of these invaluable benefits. Protest: Time: 11:30am - Place: George V statue, Old Palace Yard. Rally/Lobby: Time: 1pm - Place: Committee Room 14, House of Commons. Come along and tell your MP to support universal benefits.
